Turning Waste into Profit, Pertamina's Waste Program Supports Indonesia's Clean Waste Movement

Jakarta, March 4, 2024 - PT Pertamina (Persero) continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting the government's efforts to tackle waste through the Sampah Kita (Our Waste) program. The Sampah Kita program, a part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Responsibility (CSR) program, aims to educate the public by transforming waste into economically valuable products. This program is expected to support the government’s target of achieving a Clean Indonesia from Waste by 2025.

The Sampah Kita program aims to actively contribute to a 30% reduction in waste and a 70% waste management target. In conjunction with National Waste Awareness Day (HPSN) 2024, with the theme “Addressing Plastic Waste Productively,” Pertamina pays extra attention by launching 121 Waste Processing Programs under the Sampah Kita CSR umbrella.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, stated that by the end of 2023, Pertamina, through its 121 Sampah Kita programs, had processed 876,023 tons of waste. In addition, the program has reduced carbon emissions by 101,499 tons of CO2EQ per year.

"The Sampah Kita program has also successfully generated economic benefits, turning waste into profit. Last year, this program generated benefits of up to IDR 644 million per year and provided benefits to more than 48 thousand people around Pertamina's business units," said Fadjar.

One of the waste processing programs that has had a significant impact is Wiralodra (Community Recycling Waste Management Area) in Balongan Village, Lombang Village, and Bimasakti Prison, Indramayu Regency, West Java. Through this program, Pertamina empowers the local community to turn waste into marketable handicrafts. In addition, integrated maggot cultivation is carried out and used as feed for chickens and goats.

The Wiralodra program benefited 32 active members by increasing the group's average income to IDR 36 million per year. Furthermore, the program has managed to handle organic waste up to 200 kg per month and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 310 kg CO2 eq per year.

"Pertamina truly supports and provides assistance to village residents in this Wiralodra program so that the waste that used to accumulate and could not be processed is now utilized to make crafts and become a source of income for us village residents," said Matori, Chairman of the Wiralodra Group.

Another program that has successfully promoted community self-reliance is the kumpulin.id Waste Bank in Laksana Village, Ibun District, Bandung Regency. Through this program, Pertamina encourages villagers to manage waste into compost and ecobrick crafts. In fact, residents can exchange their waste for credit on the Kamojang online motorcycle taxi application, known as the Rangers App, and students can exchange waste for wifi vouchers for learning purposes.

"This program is very beneficial for us villagers here because waste such as coffee husks, eagle feed remnants, and plastic waste are no longer a problem; instead, they become items we can sell for profit. Moreover, students are happy to exchange waste for internet vouchers in the Sinyal Kita (Our Signal) program, providing education on cleanliness for students," said Cepi Nugraha, coordinator of the Sinyal Kita program.

The Kumpulin.id program has been able to manage inorganic waste of up to 12.9 tons and organic waste of up to 720 kg annually. A total of 2,771 customers have exchanged waste for application credit, with a total value of IDR 25.8 million. It has helped reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4,643.2 tons CO2 per year.

Pertamina's efforts to manage waste through the Sampah Kita program align with the values of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) points #8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), #12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and #13 (Climate Action). Additionally, it supports the government's efforts to achieve Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060 or earlier.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
