River Crossing and Ciliwung River Clean-Up Movement PHR – KLHK

Jakarta, January 21, 2023 - PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR), with the Directorate General of Pollution Control and Environmental Damage (DitJen PPKL) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), held a river crossing and Ciliwung River Clean Up Movement, Saturday, January 21, 2023. PHR aims to contribute to river cleanliness and sustainability, as well as support the environmental activities of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

This river crossing action was attended by the President Director of PHR, Jaffee A. Suardin; Director General of PPKL, Ir. Sigit Reliantoro, M.Sc.; Director of Water Pollution Control (PPA), Ch. Nety Widayati; and supported by Pertamina Persero and Pertamina Sub Holding Upstream (SHU). The river crossing point is about 5 km, starting from Panus Bridge, Pancoran Mas District, to Ciliwung Coffee, Beji District, Depok City.

Amid demands for increased oil and gas production in the Rokan Working Area (WK), PHR always tries to strike a balance between increasing oil and gas production and environmental sustainability. "This action simultaneously strengthens PHR and the Directorate General of PPKL KLHK collaboration to care about river environmental ecosystems, protection, and water quality management," explained President Director of PHR, Jaffee A. Suardin.

"KLHK regularly monitors river water's quality, not only in the Ciliwung River but in all rivers in Indonesia. Coupled with the strength and community-based approach, currently, even more species of fish and small shrimp have been found," said the Director General of PPKL KLHK, Sigit Reliantoro. The river can be a tourist spot that is enjoyed by its natural beauty and can benefit the community.

Inorganic waste such as plastic, styrofoam, and textiles collected from this activity is weighed for recycling by involving environmental activists who can recycle plastic and textile waste. Moreover, there is also a waste census agenda that can identify waste identification to determine its type and volume. By knowing the type and volume, the waste census activity can map dominant pollutant sources that impact river sustainability.

"This activity's implementation also invite all levels of society to be aware and actively participate in preserving the river. The river is not a place to dispose garbage," said Jaffee.

PHR is also building a wetland facility in the Rokan WK operating area to manage natural-based solution (NBS) produced water before it is distributed to water bodies. This wetland facility is the first NBS-based produced water processing wetland in the oil and gas industry in Southeast Asia.

Not only that, PHR is developing an Ecoriparian facility and floating a Biodiversity Park (KEHATI) at Lancang Kuning University (UNILAK) and is the first and foremost ecoriparian facility to preserve the Sumatran swamp forest ecosystem in the middle of Riau Province.
