President Jokowi Supports Pertamina in Developing Business Potential in Kenya

August 21, 2023 – President Joko Widodo expressed his support for Pertamina's efforts to develop and enhance business potential in Kenya. He conveyed this during a joint press statement with the President of Kenya, William Ruto, at the State House, Kenya, on Monday, August 21, 2023.

The business potential referred to is in the energy sector, particularly geothermal energy and other sectors' development, including renewable energy. President Jokowi even requested the support of the Kenyan Government to expedite the realization of this collaboration.

"Indonesia seeks to increase investment in Kenya, especially in the energy sector. Therefore, I ask for Kenya's support to facilitate the realization and expansion of Pertamina's investments with Geothermal Development Company worth USD 1.5 billion and with Guma Group in new and renewable energy. It is also necessary to establish a Bilateral Investment Treaty between the two countries," said President Jokowi.

President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, who accompanied President Jokowi on the visit to Kenya, stated that Pertamina is open to all possibilities for collaboration. In Kenya, Pertamina has already signed a memorandum of understanding in the geothermal field and is exploring strategic partnerships in upstream and downstream sectors.

"The collaboration between Pertamina and partners in Kenya showcases the commitment to the Asia-Africa relations spirit as a part of the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference. Collaboration in the energy sector is one of the main outcomes of President Jokowi's visit to Kenya," Nicke explained.

Nicke added that Kenya is a country with significant energy potential, spanning from the upstream sector to geothermal energy. "This marks the initial step for Pertamina to enter Kenya and develop the business potential that will undoubtedly be beneficial for both parties," Nicke conveyed.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
