Pertamina Upstream Subholding Implements Aggressive Massive Exploration Activities

Jakarta, April 28, 2022 – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, as Pertamina's Upstream Subholding that oversees Pertamina's upstream work areas in Indonesia and abroad, has three strategic initiatives in exploration. Exploration activities in Pertamina's working areas (WK) are carried out massively and aggressively to find new resources to maintain production.

“The three main strategies include the existing WK assets where exploration contributions are needed in maintaining and increasing existing oil and gas production. Next, the New Ventures strategy is where Pertamina's Upstream Subholding seeks new exploration potential. Lastly, the partnership strategy for risk & cost sharing as well as technology & knowledge transfer through accelerated domestic and foreign cooperation and joint bidding processes," said Medy Kurniawan, Director of Exploration of Pertamina Upstream Subholding, on Monday (25/04).

Aggressive massive exploration has also been demonstrated by Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, whereas of March 2022, two wells have been drilled, namely Sungai Gelam Timur-1 (SGET-1) and Manpatu-1X, which have succeeded in discovering oil and gas resources. Pertamina's Upstream Subholding is also conducting drilling in Camelia-001, Sungai Rotan-1, BDA-2X, Wiela-001 in the Sumatera region, and Phoenix-1 in Kalimantan, with plans to drill 29 exploration wells throughout 2022.

In addition to drilling in the existing work area, Pertamina's Upstream Subholding also carries out New Ventures activities in open areas to fulfill the Jambi Merang WK Definite Work Commitment (KKPJM). "This new venture activity in an open area aims to get a new exploration work area to look for giant discovery potential," added Medy.

Initiation of partnership with NOC/IOC through a Joint Study Agreement (JSA), focused on the Area of Interest, as a result of the temporary KKPJM, has found seven areas from 2D seismic activities along 32,215 km and five regional G&G studies covering 123 basins spread throughout Indonesia.

In carrying out exploration activities, Subholding Upstream applies the latest technologies. It includes 2D Seismic Broadband with more than 30,000 km track length, the longest Offshore Seismic Survey in the Asia Pacific for the last ten years, 2D Vibroseis Acquisition in Subvolcanic Java, Pseudo 3D Seismic Reprocessing, and survey eFTG-FTG or Full Tensor Gradiometry. This eFTG (enhanced) technology was used for the first time in Indonesia, and was carried out in the Papua region, specifically in Kepala Burung, and the FTG survey was carried out in Akimeugah.

"In addition to the new venture and partnership strategies in open areas, the application of appropriate technology is needed to Reduce subsurface uncertainty so that the target can be achieved," stated Medy.**
