Pertamina Patra Niaga Facilitates Carbon Credit Purchase for Carbon Neutral Flights

Jakarta, February 1, 2024 – To provide decarbonization solutions for its business partners, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is opening up opportunities for carbon trading with domestic and international companies. One of which is for aviation business consumers, by facilitating the Emission Reduction Certificates (ERCs) purchase for the national carrier, Garuda Indonesia, in connection with the 75th GA Anniversary Joy Flight last Tuesday (23/1).

Riva Siahaan, President Director of Pertamina Patra Niaga, expressed pride in Pertamina Patra Niaga's ability to support the "Carbon Neutral Flights" realization on the occasion of Garuda Indonesia's 75th anniversary through collaboration in carbon trading initiatives. This collaboration represents the joint efforts of both parties in supporting the national aspiration to achieve Net Zero Emissions for Indonesia by 2060.

“Pertamina Patra Niaga not only sells aviation fuel to our partners, in this case, aviation consumers, but also has the Pertamina One Solution B2B concept. We offer solutions for consumer business decarbonization needs. It follows with our goal of being a decarbonization journey partner as part of efforts to support the realization of Net Zero Emissions for Indonesia by 2060,” Riva explained.

ERCs are part of the emissions reduction management mechanism documented in evidence of emission reduction by businesses and/or activities that have undergone Measurement, Reporting, and Verification and are recorded in the National Climate Change Control Registration System in the form of registry numbers and/or codes.

“We continue to minimize emissions that can impact the climate crisis. One such effort is supporting the decarbonization steps of our partners in converting carbon emissions generated during flight operations. Garuda Indonesia has purchased 50 tCO2-eq carbon credits,” Riva added.

Garuda Indonesia conducted a "joy flight" using the B737-800 fleet with flight number GA006, flying through Soekarno Hatta International Airport to cross the Pelabuhan Ratu area and then returning to Soekarno Hatta Airport. This flight is a form of appreciation from Garuda Indonesia to outsourced employees with specific criteria, including security personnel, cleaning service staff, and office boys who have supported the Company's business activities.

Irfan Setiaputra, President Director of Garuda Indonesia, stated in his official statement that, as part of efforts to support decarbonization, Garuda Indonesia has implemented various sustainable initiatives, including conducting the first commercial flight using bio-aviation fuel in collaboration with Pertamina.

“Garuda Indonesia's active involvement in carbon emission reduction is part of Garuda Indonesia's strategic roadmap to accelerate its transformation as an increasingly agile and adaptive airline in anticipation of the new era of Garuda Indonesia as an airline that continues to transform, maximizing performance including contributions to environmental preservation missions,” explained Irfan.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), stated that decarbonizing all Pertamina's business lines with partners will accelerate carbon emission reduction targets.

“Pertamina is committed to decarbonizing all of its business lines, including working with partners, to achieve the Net Zero Emission target,” said Fadjar.
