Pertamina Explores Energy Collaboration in Africa

Kenya, August 21, 2023 – PT Pertamina (Persero) is further expanding its presence abroad as part of the Go Global initiative and to strengthen energy sovereignty within the country. Pertamina and its sub-holding are initiating various potential strategic collaborations with energy companies in Africa, for activities in upstream oil and gas, infrastructure development, refining facilities, downstream product distribution partnerships, and new and renewable energy sources development such as geothermal.

"Pertamina Group's upcoming collaborations in Africa, coinciding with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo’s visit from August 20 to 24, 2023, will become a cornerstone in the energy sector for Indonesia. These collaborations can enhance cooperation with African countries and foster global partnerships," explained President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, during her visit to Kenya, Africa, on Monday (21/8).

In Kenya, as the first country visited, Pertamina, through its subsidiary PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Africa Geothermal International Limited (AGIL) on Sunday, August 20, 2023, for geothermal technology development and geothermal resources utilization. Through this collaboration, PGE will have the opportunity to learn about infrastructure development and geothermal technology utilization to be implemented in Indonesia while also expanding its geothermal development in Kenya.

In the upstream sector, Pertamina's subsidiary under the upstream sub-holding, PT Pertamina Internasional Eksplorasi dan Produksi (PIEP), is also exploring collaboration potential with the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK). This exploration marks Pertamina's initial steps beyond its borders in the upstream sector, thus enhancing national energy resilience. "With the 'bring the barrel home' spirit, Pertamina's footprint in the upstream sector aims to increase production to be processed in Pertamina's domestic refineries," added Nicke.

Beyond upstream and new renewable energy sources like geothermal, Nicke revealed that Pertamina also has expansion opportunities in various energy fields through Government-to-Government (G-to-G) cooperation between the Indonesian and Kenyan governments. This bilateral cooperation also opens investment opportunities and Pertamina's collaboration prospects in the African region.

"We appreciate the government’s role, including the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in supporting Pertamina's expansion efforts on the global stage," she explained.

Before this visit, Pertamina had already established a Memorandum of Understanding with GUMA, an energy company in Africa, regarding a Strategic Alliance in Potential Projects within the Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream sectors. This collaboration encompasses oil field exploration and production, pipeline development, as well as oil and petrochemical refinery development. Additionally, it involves Pertamina's petroleum product trading in Kenya.

"We bring forth the government’s spirit and the 1955 Asian-African Conference spirit in Bandung. We are now collaborating on economic development. Pertamina itself presents opportunities for cooperation in the upstream to downstream sectors, including geothermal development in Kenya," Nicke added.

Vice President of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, further emphasized that Pertamina is bringing various sub holdings to delve into collaboration potentials in Africa. These collaborations are expected to further bolster national energy resilience and simultaneously fulfill the company's role as a global energy enterprise. "We are open to all business cooperation opportunities with positive impact on Pertamina and the country," Fadjar clarified.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
