Pertamina and Toyota Join Forces to Develop Hydrogen Ecosystem for Transportation from Upstream to Downstream

Jakarta, January 17, 2024 – Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) is collaborating with Toyota to develop a hydrogen ecosystem as a vehicle fuel in Indonesia. During the groundbreaking hydrogen refueling station (HRS) today, Wednesday (17/1), at the Daan Mogot petrol station, both parties agreed that building this ecosystem is not only about preparing the infrastructure but also involves cooperation with consumers to ensure demand levels.

The collaboration between the two entities is outlined in the Joint Development Agreement on the development of a hydrogen-based transportation ecosystem. The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer of Pertamina NRE, Dannif Danusaputro, and the President Director of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), Nandi Julyanto. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the President Commissioner of PT Pertamina (Persero), Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, and the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati.

“Pertamina must be at the forefront of innovation; we should not be followers if we want to be in the clean energy business,” said Basuki in his speech. "I hope this cooperation continues between Pertamina and Toyota so that the hydrogen ecosystem continues to grow in Indonesia," he added.

"Pertamina has proven to be highly experienced in the vehicle fuel sector. With our upstream-to-downstream infrastructure, Pertamina is the most prepared to develop the hydrogen ecosystem for transportation. Furthermore, the collaboration with Toyota is a very appropriate step to accelerate the creation of this ecosystem," Nicke echoed Basuki's sentiments.

"The groundbreaking of the hydrogen refueling station is a milestone in building the hydrogen ecosystem as a vehicle fuel in Indonesia. However, what is equally important in creating the ecosystem is collaboration, not only on the upstream side but also on the downstream side, which is why we are working with Toyota, which has produced the fuel cell electric vehicle, Toyota Mirai, who will refuel at our HRS. We welcome this strategic collaboration," Dannif expressed at the same event.

Dannif added that hydrogen’s presence as a transportation fuel will strengthen energy resilience. In the future, motor vehicle users will not only have the option of oil-based fuels and electricity but also hydrogen as an alternative fuel. Pertamina is enthusiastic about the increasing number of infrastructure providers in this sector, as it will speed up the construction of infrastructure, helping to accelerate the creation of a market and the formation of an ecosystem in Indonesia.

Nandi also conveyed a similar message, "We are proud to be part of this project and provide cutting-edge hydrogen technology vehicles, ensuring fast, efficient, and safe hydrogen refueling mechanisms. Hopefully, this hydrogen refueling station will serve as an example and a model for similar projects in the future."

The Daan Mogot petrol station will become the first integrated energy refueling station in Indonesia, providing three types of fuels in one refueling station: fuel, gas, and hydrogen. With a High-Speed Hydrogen Refueling Station concept, this HRS will be capable of commercial-scale hydrogen refueling in less than five minutes.

Dannif stated that Pertamina NRE aspires not only to be a domestic player but also to serve the hydrogen export market from 2031 to 2040. Hydrogen is becoming one of Pertamina's future green business portfolios, and Indonesia has the potential to be a major player in this sector at the regional level.**
