Executing the Longest and Fastest Drilling Activities, Pertamina Saves Time, and Oil and Gas Operational Costs

Jakarta, March 14, 2023 - PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) Kalimantan set two new records, Namely, the drilling of the longest stretch of 3,346 meters in a single sequence and the fastest drilling rate of 40.6 meters/hour in South Mahakam offshore drilling. With this achievement, PHM can save time and drilling costs, which reduces the company's oil and gas operating costs.

PHM General Manager, Krisna said that the drilling success could eliminate the potential loss of drilling mud and increase the potential for oil and gas discoveries in the reservoir zone, which had never been done before.

"The company continues to apply various innovations and technologies in its oil and gas operations and business, one of which is in drilling activities, by implementing the best practices in the national and world oil and gas industry," Krisna explained.

This longest drilling performance used the Hakuryu-14 Rig in the JM-101.G1 well, Jempang Metulang field, South Mahakam, with a hole section interval of 8.5 inches. The fastest drilling rate (On Bottom Rate of Penetration /OB ROP) occurred in well JM-101.G1, which reached 40.6 meters/hour OB ROP. This speed increased by 150% from the previous average drilling speed on the JM-1 platform, which was around 15 meters/hour OB ROP. In addition, PHM also set a record for the fastest milling operation in the JM-107.G1 well. Drilled with casing 9-5/8”, the milling JM-107.G1 operation only takes 2.5 hours.

Krisna added that this achievement was realized through harmonious collaboration and synergy between the company and partners, including in the innovation and technology application needed to achieve operational excellence. In the drilling at Hakuryu-14, innovation from the Maxi Drill project was applied by utilizing the Motorized Rotary Steerable System (RSS) in the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA), using drill bits suitable for formation conditions. Innovation is also carried out by optimizing drilling parameters which increases drilling performance.

PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM), a subsidiary of Pertamina Hulu International (PHI), runs upstream oil and gas operations and business according to ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) principles in the Mahakam Work Area in East Kalimantan. PHM, with other PHI subsidiaries and affiliates, continues to carry out various innovations and technological applications in producing safe, efficient, reliable, compliant, and environmentally friendly energy to realize #EnergiKalimantanForIndonesia.**
