Establishing International Synergy, Pertamina's Steps to Prepare Human Resources for Energy Transition

Jakarta, May 30, 2023 - Pertamina has emphasized its commitment to preparing reliable Human Resources (HR) to implement the energy transition program. One of the initiatives is through the synergy between Pertamina University and two leading Japanese universities, Tokyo University and Kyushu University.

President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, welcomed the cooperation signing held on the 28th Nikkei Forum sidelines in Tokyo, Japan (26/5). The importance of HR reliability follows Pertamina's efforts to improve its ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) rating. From a rating of 41.6 (severe) in 2021, rising to 28.1 (medium), then rising to 22.1 (medium) in October 2022. With this score, Pertamina’s ESG is currently placed second in the world in the integrated oil and gas company category based on the Sustainalytics ranking.

"Thus, the next journey is to prepare human resources and strengthen research and development for the energy transition. One of the initiatives is to build a sustainability academy at Pertamina University and build cooperation with a global university. Pertamina University's collaboration with Tokyo University & Kyushu University is part of the plan," Nicke said.

Nicke added that Pertamina's presence at the prestigious Nikkei Forum is a form of support and motivation for the company to carry out initiatives in producing clean energy in Indonesia.

At this international forum, the Nikkei Forum presents several global class speakers, government leaders, business people, and academics in the Asia Pacific, including Pertamina. The issue discussed is the Asian countries' role in the world.

Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of Pertamina, Salyadi Saputra, at the Nikkei Forum, explained Pertamina's commitment to supporting Indonesia's Government in achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) in 2060 by developing asset decarbonization and green business development. "Indonesia is now paying more attention to climate change. Supporting this, we have formulated an NZE roadmap, consisting of two pillars, decarbonization and NRE (new and renewable energy)," Salyadi said in his presentation.

Aligned with that, Nicke believes that Indonesia and Pertamina have great potential in the two pillars. Therefore, Pertamina is always open to building partnerships, both domestically and internationally.

"Collaboration between companies and governments, and the most important thing is collaborations between humanity contributing to concrete actions to achieve the goal of providing access to sustainable energy and protecting our climate for generations to come," Nicke concluded.

The VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added the company's commitment to ESG and implementation in every line of its business shows Pertamina's seriousness. "Our commitment is to become a company that is not only environmentally friendly but also prepares a company roadmap to support sustainability," Fadjar said.

Pertamina, as a leading company in energy transition, is committed to supporting the 2060 Net Zero Emissions target by encouraging programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. These efforts follow the Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation in Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
