CCUS Implementation: Pertamina Conducts First CO2 Injection at Sukowati Field

Bojonegoro, December 7, 2023 - Following the successful initial CO2 injection at Jatibarang Field, PT Pertamina (Persero) is once again implementing Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology in another field, namely at the Pertamina EP Sukowati Field in Bojonegoro, East Java.

This significant milestone in Pertamina's CCUS program is marked by the inauguration of the first CO2 injection into the Sukowati Field using the Huff & Puff method, conducted this Thursday (7/12) by Djoko Siswanto, Secretary General of the National Energy Council; Oki Muraza, Senior Vice President of Research and Technology Innovation of Pertamina; Awang Lazuardi, Director of Development and Production of Pertamina Hulu Energi; Kenichi Suzuki, GM of the Carbon Neutral Business Department at Overseas Business Division II of JAPEX; and Hiroshi Okabe, Deputy Councilor of the Hydrogen and CCS Project Department of JOGMEC.

500 tons of CO2 were injected into the Sukowati-18 (SKW-18) well over a 7-day period. This CCUS technology implementation aims to enhance field production through CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) application.

Oki Muraza, SVP of Research and Technology Innovation of Pertamina, emphasized that CO2 Injection implementation using the Huff & Puff method at the Sukowati Field will provide confirmation and validation of EOR technology specifically.

"The objective of CO2 injection in Pertamina's second field is to assess the effects of CO2 EOR and CO2 storage in subsurface formations for oil and gas fields. The results of this study are expected to be applied in other Pertamina fields actively studying CO2-EOR, thereby supporting the one million BOPD target achievement by 2030," stated Oki.

In line with Oki, Awang Lazuardi, Director of Development & Production of PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, mentioned that in the future, during full implementation, CCUS at Sukowati Field will utilize CO2 sourced from the Jambaran Tiung Biru Field.

"We are welcoming a new era, one of them being CCUS for oil and gas EOR. It will be beneficial for future business. The hope is that the results can be evaluated and progressed to the full implementation stage with CO2 sourced from Jambaran Tiung Biru. With CO2-EOR innovation, we hope to drive increased production at Sukowati," explained Awang.

Tutuka Ariadji, Director General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, welcomed the CCUS technology implementation by Pertamina.

"Indonesia has significant potential in the CCUS field, and the Sukowati Field will serve as an example with its substantial CO2 capacity. We hope that the CCUS implementation in Sukowati will succeed and serve as a learning platform for CCUS development in other fields," expressed Tutuka.

The CCUS achievement at Sukowati Field is the result of a collaborative study between Pertamina, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), and the Japan Petroleum Exploration Company Limited (JAPEX), following the Joint Study Agreement signed by the parties in July 2023.

Indonesia holds immense potential in CCS/CCUS, and to seize these opportunities, Pertamina is currently collaborating with various strategic partners for CCS/CCUS development across Indonesia. Apart from Sukowati Field, Pertamina is also developing CCS/CCUS programs in seven other locations across Indonesia, namely in Central Sumatra, South Sumatra, Asri Basin, Jatibarang, Gundih, East Kalimantan, and Central Sulawesi.

Through the CCS/CCUS technology implementation, Pertamina is realizing its commitment to fulfilling the national energy needs while simultaneously engaging in decarbonization efforts to support the Net Zero Emission target by 2060.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
