“Equitable Energy Transition Seminar by BKTI PII in Collaboration with Three Leading Universities as Input to the B20 Task Force for Energy, Sustainability & Climate”.

Ahead of the G20 Summit, the Chancellors and Industrial Engineering Engineers Give Feedback to the B20 Task Force for Equitable Energy Transition

November 6, 2022 – To spread awareness about the Equitable & Affordable Energy Transition, the Industrial Engineering Vocational Agency – the Indonesian Engineers Association in collaboration with the Department of Industrial Engineering FTI Trisakti University, Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia, PT Pertamina (Persero), and PT Jababeka Tbk held a seminar with the theme: “The Role of Human Resources Development and Strengthening MSMEs”, on Friday, November 4, 2022.

Chancellor of Trisakti University, Prof. Dr. Ir. Kadarsah Suryadi, DEA, said, “Talking about energy transition means we are switching from the old system to the new system. In the old system, many parties used conventional energy ranging from oil, gas, coal, and others. Oil, gas, and coal could be transported from one country to another, while the new system is new renewable energy, namely solar energy, wind, ocean currents, geothermal, and garbage. The energy transition means we have to think about switching to new renewable energy, where new renewable energy cannot be transported to other countries. For this reason, cross-disciplinary collaboration is needed for new and renewable energy to be more productive so that the energy transition process can run smoothly.”

President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, as the Chair of the B20 Energy, Sustainability & Climate (ESC) Taskforce who is also the BKTI-PII Advisory Board in her speech delivered by Agung Wicaksono as Deputy Chair of the B20 Taskforce (ESC) said, "One of our three recommendations in this B20 ESC taskforce is that the energy transition must be just and affordable for all parties. No one was left behind. Therefore, human resource development and strengthening MSMEs are an important part of these recommendations.”

Agung, also Deputy Chair II of BKTI-PII and Managing Director at Jababeka Infrastructure, said, "Therefore, Taskforce B20 ESC consulted with three university rectors and two professors who are also the Expert Board at BKTI PII to formulate education concept for human resources to be ready for this energy transition. Furthermore, consultations with the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs and engineers working in small and medium-sized enterprises are needed as well to strengthen them in this process.”

It is hoped that, following the Kampus Merdeka principle, which brings Universities closer to Practitioners, a higher education curriculum can be developed following the industry needs and energy practitioners' experience.

Several speakers from various universities participated in this seminar, including Prof. Ir. I Gusti Nyoman Wiratmaja, Ph.D. (Rector of Pertamina University); Dr. Ir. M. Satori, M.T., IPU (Head of Division IX Research, Assessment & Consultation of BKTI PII); Prof. Ir. Togar M. Simatupang, M.Tech., Ph.D., IPU (Professor of SBM ITB); Prof. Dr. Ir. Chairy, S.E., MM (Rector of President University); moderated by Dr. Rina Fitriana S.T., M.M., IPM, ASEAN Eng (Head of Industrial Engineering Study Program, Trisakti University).

As an academic who is also experienced as a practitioner at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Chancellor of Universitas Pertamina, Prof. IGN Wiratmaja Puja, said that changes in energy geopolitics and disruption in the education sector need to be addressed. “Opportunities in green jobs and technological innovations such as hydrogen and smart grids need to be higher education future areas,” Prof. IGN Wiratmaja explained.

In the energy transition agenda, Prof. Togar reminded that often policy plans are not implemented due to weak governance and a lack of change agents. “Universities play a major role as a driving force to ensure a just and affordable energy transition. Technology, implementation, and funding cannot be done separately and develop with the human capital development axis based on the supply chain with high added value. Only with the five helices co-creation, energy transitions can take place instead of being a burden," Prof. Togar explained.

Meanwhile, Dr. Satori conveyed about the circular economy, which is not only a concept but has been applied both as research that has received a patent and community service in the environment around his neighborhood.

Prof. Chairy said that President University prepares human resources through a concept he calls "The President University Way". “We established Fablab Jababeka as a collaboration between universities, developers & industrial estate managers. Fablab has become an integrated hub for the implementation of technology, one of which is towards net zero emission in the energy transition," explained the Chancellor of the university with the highest percentage of foreign students in Indonesia.

Moreover, the panel discussion was also filled with speakers from the industry. Namely, Ir. Faizal Safa, S.T., M.Sc, IPU. ASEAN ENG., ACPE (Chairman of BKTI PII); Safitri Siswono, ST., MM (President Director of ACS Group); Aditya Wira Santika (Manager Investor Information & Engagement of PT Pertamina (Persero)); and Wiza Hidayat, S.T., GP., IPM., ASEAN Eng (CEO of Arkadia Works & Green Building Professional).

Located in the Auditorium in D Building, Trisakti University, this event was attended by more than 300 students from Trisakti University, Pertamina University, President University, and the MSME community. This event is also broadcasted through online channels.

At this event, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between BKTI PII, Spora EV, and the Transportation Office of the Mayor of Pekanbaru regarding the "Pilot Project for Bus Conversion for Public Transportation in Pekanbaru" as a tangible manifestation of the Indonesian Engineers Association's role as a "Collaborator" that brings together the world of technology with the society's needs. This initiative was initiated by Shadiq Helmy Oemar (Chairman of the VIII Community Service and Sustainability of BKTI PII) and is expected to continue to roll out to all cities and provinces in Indonesia.

"This seminar is intended to open a space for discussion, collaboration, socialization, and exchange of ideas between the Government, Industry, and Universities regarding Human Resource Transition and the MSMEs Involvement importance to ensure a Just & Affordable Energy Transition", said Wiza Hidayat as Chairman of the Organizing Committee.**
