Aggressively Finding Gas Resources, Pertamina Supports Environmentally Friendly Energy Transition Commitment

Jakarta, December 14, 2022 - PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as Pertamina's Upstream Subholding, continues to improve performance to support national energy security. PHE also continues to make maximum efforts to fulfill domestic energy needs. Based on the National Energy General Plan (RUEN), Indonesia's energy mix composition is expected to be dominated by New Renewable Energy (NRE) in 2050. Moreover, it is estimated that oil and gas energy will also play a role in fulfilling national energy needs.

Throughout 2022, PHE carried out a massive and aggressive operations strategy through several exploratory drills success which resulted in additional extracted 2C resources of 144 MMBO for oil and 931 BCFG for gas.

It was conveyed by the Director of Exploration of PHE, Muharram Jaya Panguriseng, during the Energy & Mining Editor Society (E2S) Awards event. "Following the government's Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060, PHE has an energy transition strategy by increasing environmentally friendly natural gas energy utilization, decarbonization programs, and Carbon Capture Utilization & Storage (CCUS) and Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) technological innovations," he explained.

Gas reserves discovery is supported by the successful exploration drilling of the Sungai Gelam Timur-1, Wilela-001, Bajakah-001, Kolibri-1, Manpatu-1X, Markisa-001, and GQX wells which have their resources validated in 2022. Meanwhile, discoveries R-2, S-2, Sungai Rotan-1, and Kembo-001 will be recorded in 2023. Apart from that, as part of the Pertamina integrated energy company value chain, PHE is also supported by the Sub holding Gas infrastructure.

In carrying out exploration activities, PHE applies several latest technologies. It includes 2D Seismic Broadband with a track length of more than 32,000 km, the longest Offshore Seismic Survey in the Asia Pacific for the last 10 years, Full Tensor Gradiometry (FTG) which is being used for the first time in Indonesia, as well as 2D Vibroseis Acquisition which features state-of-the-art technology for better evaluation of sub-volcanic targets via wireless receivers.

Muharram, also explained the LPG Production Booster System innovation at the Badak LNG Bontang Refinery. This technology can increase LPG production for the Bontang region by up to 323% or 603 M3 per day. "This technological invention gives hope that we can produce additional national LPG production, which can automatically reduce LPG imports. Efficiency or reducing energy utilization carefully and sparingly can contribute to reducing carbon emissions," said Muharram.

PHE has also been registered with the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) as a participant/member since June 2022. PHE is committed to the Ten Universal Principles or Ten Principles of the UNGC in its strategy and operations as part of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects implementation. PHE has an ESG rating of 30.5 or 23 out of a total of 250 oil & gas producers. PHE will continue to develop its operations management in the country and abroad professionally to actualize the achievement of becoming a world-class oil and gas company that is environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and has good governance.**
