Social Responsibility & Community Development
Pertamina is aiming to develop and maintain harmonious relationship with its surrounding community wherever it operates and to work hand in hand with the Government in order to provide the greatest benefits to the communities. Pertamina is committed to be responsible for its corporate social and environmental obligations by continuously conforming to the principles of environmentally sustainable development. At Pertamina all activities must be conducted in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner. Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Protection As a company that deals with the processing of natural resources, Pertamina realizes that it is operating in areas that are extremely sensitive to the environment and social issues that may affect the environmental sustainability and the surrounding community development. This is mainly because most of materials used or products processed by Pertamina either flammable, combustible or toxic substance that can easily cause accidents, fire, explosions and environment pollution. In order to control the potential negative impacts of its operation, Pertamina has implemented an integrated system named Safety, Health and Environment (SHE). Community Development Development program is a realization of Pertamina's responsibilities towards the growth and development of the surrounding community. Pertamina's community development includes various initiatives including local economic development, education, religion, health, sport, transportation, social and environment. These initiatives are focused to the surrounding community within a radius of 2.5-5 kilometers of each Pertamina's operation. These include operation units, depots, terminals, special ports, offices and housing development. Secondly, these initiatives are dedicated to community development at the district and provincial level. The success of Pertamina's community development programs is reflected by improved public facilities close to its operating units such as roads, schools, bridges, port, mosque, churches, health centers, community centers, sports facilities and human resources development through various scholarship programs by Pertamina. The scholarship program includes funding many university lecturers to pursue higher education abroad. Small Enterprise and Cooperatives Empowerment Small Business and Cooperatives Development program, internally known as Pembinaan Usaha Kecil dan Koperasi (PUKK), aims to help the surrounding small businesses and cooperatives by enhancing the growth of their businesses. Pertamina's participation is in the form of soft loan, and grant to small businesses and cooperatives. It is expected that loan and grant help them to become independent and competitive entities locally and globally. Applying the government's share of its profit, Pertamina has put aside 1-3% from net profit on an annual basis to be allocated to this program. This program was started in 1990. The operating activities of PUKK has been extended throughout the country, and Pertamina has been able to reach every province in Indonesia through this program. In 2002, Pertamina distributed Rp. 64 billion for this program, an increase of Rp. 22 billion or 52% compared to that of 2001. |
