President Director of Pertamina: Global Collaboration to Address Energy Trilemma

Jakarta, July 28, 2023 - President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, emphasizes global collaboration’s importance in facing the energy trilemma during the energy transition. The energy trilemma refers to energy security, affordability, and sustainability.

"Energy plays a crucial role in driving economic growth. Thus, energy transition must not compromise energy supply reliability and lead to increased energy prices. Ensuring energy security and energy affordability remains a top priority for Indonesia while making various efforts to reduce carbon emissions to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060," said Nicke Widyawati during the 47th Indonesian Petroleum Association (IPA) Convention and Exhibition held at ICE, BSD City, Tangerang on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.

Nicke added that each country faces different urgencies in responding to the energy trilemma, depending on their level of economic growth and societal well-being.

According to Nicke, all countries, including in Southeast Asia, faced the need to balance energy security, inflation, and clean energy targets in 2022. It is closely related to geopolitical conditions, including the ongoing impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Nicke further stated that developed countries tend to consume higher energy per capita compared to developing countries. It is mainly due to higher income, better access to technology, and greater access to energy sources.

"Indonesia plays a crucial role on the global stage in the energy transition due to its abundant natural resources and strategic location. Global collaboration is necessary to support a clean energy transition," Nicke emphasized.

Nicke continued, by mentioning that Indonesia possesses the world's largest nickel reserves, which can be utilized as raw materials for electric batteries. Additionally, Indonesia holds the world's second-largest tin reserves, sixth-largest bauxite reserves, seventh-largest copper reserves, and a renewable energy potential of 437.4 GW. Simultaneously, Indonesia also has a CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) potential of up to 400 Giga Tons.

"The Indonesian government has set a target of 23% Renewable Energy Mix by 2025 and 60% - 61% by 2060. With global support, these targets can be achieved faster and higher," said Nicke.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
