Pertamina Hulu Rokan, along with Mitsui and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), signing an MoU regarding Carbon Capture at the International & Indonesia CCS FORUM 2023 "Pioneering The Energy Landscape Decarbonization Future: Harnessing The Power Of CCS Globally For A Cleaner Future And Economic Growth," at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta on Monday (11/9/2023).

Pertamina Develops Carbon Capture and Storage Technology to Achieve NZE 2060 Target

Jakarta, September 11, 2023 – PT Pertamina (Persero) continues to develop carbon capture and storage technology, also known as Carbon Capture Storage/Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCS/CCUS), to support the government in achieving the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target by 2060. The CCS/CCUS implementation in Indonesia is believed to increase oil and gas production while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

It was revealed by the President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, during her speech at the International & Indonesia Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Forum 2023, with the theme "Pioneering the Energy Landscape Decarbonization Future: Harnessing the Power of CCS Globally for a Cleaner Future and Economic Growth," in Jakarta on Monday, September 11, 2023.

During this event, Pertamina signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with several parties involved in the CCS/CCUS technology implementation. These parties include PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam, PT Pertamina Hulu Sanga-Sanga, and PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Chevron, and Mitsui.

The President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, explained that through CCUS activities, Pertamina will play its role as a sustainable national energy supplier while providing carbon reduction solutions and enhancing the economy and other multiplier effects.

"Pertamina is ready and committed to contributing to the country's efforts as outlined in our NZE Roadmap. The roadmap is based on three main strategic pillars: existing decarbonization assets, the environmentally friendly energy businesses development, and carbon-negative initiatives such as CCUS & Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)," Nicke said.

She mentioned that Pertamina's active role in CCUS operations is demonstrated through CO2 injection at the Pertamina EP - Jatibarang Field, West Java. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology, utilizing CO2 for huff and puff, has positvely impact the reservoir. Furthermore, Pertamina will conduct CO2 injection activities at the Sukowati Field in East Java to increase oil and gas production while potentially storing CO2.

Nicke continued to express Pertamina's active support for the Indonesian Government's important target to become one of the CCS Hubs in the ASEAN region. She stated that Indonesia's mission to develop CCS has a promising future, considering that abundant natural resources, such as oil, gas, and coal, prove the sedimentary basins’ existence as potentially suitable for CO2 storage throughout the country.

Various studies indicate a potential storage capacity of up to 400 gigatons (GT) in these sedimentary basins. Indonesia's geographical position is also advantageous for cross-border CO2 transport, thus supporting the development of CCS Hubs in the Asia-Pacific region.

Nicke also stated that Pertamina is ready to collaborate with various stakeholders in the CCS/CCUS development.

"If necessary, we are also prepared to actively engage in future regulations and policies to create a more comprehensive CCS/CCUS ecosystem in Indonesia," she added.

During the same event, the Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Menko Marves), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, who attended virtually, mentioned that countries worldwide have implemented CCS/CCUS technology to reduce emissions. He emphasized that the CCS Hubs development in Indonesia has significant potential, given Indonesia's abundant natural resources and potential for storing up to 400 gigatons.

"Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing, we can harness the full potential of CCS to achieve a sustainable future for Southeast Asia," Luhut explained.

Luhut also expressed appreciation to all parties who supported the organization of this event, including the signing of the MoU related to the development of CCS/CCUS.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
