Nicke Widyawati Requests Universitas Pertamina to Prepare Graduates With Sustainability Skills

November 9, 2023 – Nicke Widyawati, the Chair of the Advisory Board of Universitas Pertamina (UPER) and the President Director of Pertamina, stated that the energy transition and decarbonization programs for the sustainability of the earth face three main challenges: funding, technology, and human resources.

"Technology could work together with other parties. Obtaining funding would be possible if there were resources and markets. However, human resources are irreplaceable. We must develop Indonesian human resources. It is where Pertamina University must play a role," Nicke said at the Pertamina University Advisory Board inaugural meeting.

According to the LinkedIn Global Skills 2023 report, the global need for green skills reaches 40%, but only 13% of the workforce has green skills. Although, there is an increase in the sustainability workforce number sector by 12 percent in 2023, it has not met the demand for work in the sustainability sector, which increases by 22.7 percent every year.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ir. Tutuka Ariadji M.Sc., Ph.D., the University Advisory Board member and the Director-General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (KESDM), welcomed the plan to establish a vocational campus for Universitas Pertamina in the Indonesian Knowledge Campus (IKN). "The multi-campus establishment at IKN will leverage Pertamina Group network strength. Universitas Pertamina must optimize the downstream oil and gas processes to be the comparative advantage in the university," Prof. Tutuka said.

The Advisory Board of Universitas Pertamina's inaugural meeting on October 25, 2023, was also attended by Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Santoso M.Sc., PGDip.Diab., IPU., Dr. Ir. Widhyawan Prawiraatmadja, Prof. Dr. Rer. Nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc, Prof. Dr, Ir. Mochamad Ashari, M.Eng, IPU, AEng., and Dr. Ir. Mulyono, M.T., M.T.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoko Santoso M.Sc., PGDip.Diab., IPU., expressed that energy education will remain relevant in the future, even as the world moves towards sustainable energy. "Economic development will impact greater energy usage. As a result, per capita emissions will also increase. Universitas Pertamina plays a role in educating human resources capable of supporting energy transition and decarbonization. Thus, together, we move towards net-zero emissions," Prof. Djoko stated.

On the same occasion, Nicke Widyawati, with the Advisory Board members, converse with students. Yuliana Meranti Bofra, a student and recipient of the Sobat Bumi scholarship for indigenous people from Papua, expressed that the opportunity to continue her education at Universitas Pertamina paved the way for her to develop her region, Tambrauw Regency in Papua, known for its conservation efforts.

Besides ensuring inclusive and equitable education quality, Universitas Pertamina strives for quality education by developing a curriculum based on learning outcomes and several programs to enhance the graduate's capacity to address sustainability issues.

"Through the sustainable development curriculum implementation, students actively participate in collaborative research with industry and community service. They are also prepared to become competitive graduates through the Red and White Graduates program, which prepares students to take advantage of career opportunities within the Pertamina group through training and mentoring by industry practitioners," said the Rector of Universitas Pertamina, Prof. Dr. Ir. Wawan Gunawan A. Kadir, MS.

Similarly, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication at Pertamina, added that sustainability skills are crucial in supporting the Indonesian Government's 2050 Net Zero Emission (NZE) target. "Aligned with the focus on sustainability, Pertamina through Universitas Pertamina encourages the mastery of sustainability practices by students, enabling them to contribute to achieving NZE," Fadjar concluded.
