ISF 2023, Pertamina Invites Potential & Capability Exploration for Alternative Fuel Production

Jakarta, September 7, 2023 – To build sustainable energy, all components of the nation need to come together to explore the potential and capability for producing alternative fuels, such as bioenergy.

Discussed during the opening of the Indonesia Sustainability Forum 2023 themed "Cultivating a Greener Future: Fostering Capability and Sustainability with Alternative Fuels" in Jakarta on September 7, 2023.

Tutuka Ariadji, the Director General of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), representing the Minister of EMR emphasized bioenergy's significant role in the energy transition, especially decarbonization in the transportation sector. Bioenergy, as an alternative fuel replacing fossil fuels, has a positive impact because it comes from renewable sources. It adds value through the domestic agricultural industry downstream, improves small farmers' welfare, emits fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuels, reduces fuel imports, saves foreign exchange and trade balance, creates job opportunities, and ensures national energy security.

"The bioenergy industry requires innovative methods aimed at improving production process efficiency, producing quality fuels at affordable prices, enhancing environmental sustainability, and increasing farmers' well-being," Tutuka said.

At the same event, A. Salyadi Saputra, Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development (SPPU) of PT Pertamina (Persero), explained that emissions from the transportation sector will continue to rise, and bioenergy can be the answer to fulfill the fuel needs and reduce global emissions.

"Pertamina's investment in bioenergy, especially Biofuel, can provide short-term benefits while contributing to a sustainable future," Salyadi said.

Pertamina also acknowledges that achieving green energy requires the capabilities and expertise enhancement to benefit the environment, economy, and society.

Therefore, he said, Pertamina is participating in the Indonesia Sustainability Forum as an event that can foster significant collaborations for a greener world and sustainable business growth.

"We are open to opportunities for innovation and cooperation for a better national energy future," Salyadi concluded.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
