Educating the Young Generation to Care for the Environment through Self-Reliant Energy Schools in Semarang

Semarang, December 14, 2023 - The role of the younger generation in ensuring the earth's future sustainability must be nurtured from an early age. Through the Self-Reliant Energy School (SEB) program, Pertamina invites young people to be more environmentally conscious through education and Renewable Energy use at Adiwiyata School, SMA N 14 Semarang, on Wednesday (13/12).

SMA N 14 Semarang's Adiwiyata School is one of the ten pioneers of Pertamina's Self-Reliant Energy Schools in Indonesia.

Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that this program aligns with Pertamina's commitment to nurture the younger generation to be more environmentally conscious and to spread sustainable benefits to the community and the surrounding environment.

"Pertamina not only distributes energy throughout the country but also implements community empowerment programs through social and environmental responsibility programs (TJSL). One of them is the Pertamina Self-Reliant Energy School program. This program aims to support the government in the energy transition process in education and the younger generation," Fadjar said.

The program aims to support Adiwiyata Schools and encourages students to participate in preserving the environment. It follows Pertamina's commitment to implementing the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), point four of quality education, point seven of clean and affordable energy, and point 13 of climate change mitigation.

In addition to education about environmental care and renewable energy, Pertamina also donates clean energy in the form of solar panel installations with a capacity of 3.3 Kwp, which are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 3,820 kg CO2 eq/year and save electricity costs for research needs through school laboratories.

Pertamina also guides the utilization of Renewable Energy, motivating students to innovate in the field of energy technology through the Upcycling Expo and tree-planting activities in the school environment.

Afforestation is also implemented in this activity by planting fruit tree seedlings in the courtyard of SMA 14 Semarang, including Alligator Avocado, HAZ Avocado, California Lemon, and Bawor Durian seedlings.

The Special Staff of the President of the Republic of Indonesia of Innovation, Education, and Outermost Regions, Billy Mambrasar, appreciates Pertamina's initiative in promoting new renewable energy.

"On behalf of President RI Joko Widodo, I, as the Special Staff to the President of RI, thank you to Pertamina for educating and inspiring thousands of Indonesian young people by teaching about caring for Renewable Energy and providing concrete actions in the form of alternative energy source contributions," said Billy.

Billy, the SDGs Ambassador of Indonesia, hopes that SMA N 14 Semarang students can use it to the fullest. In his speech, he also advised the School Principal to make the school an example and pioneer in Central Java Province as a leading school, demonstrating how energy can be preserved, conserved, and replaced with alternative energy.

At the same time, the Principal of SMA N 14 Semarang, Aniek Windrayani, also stated that this program is in line with the mission of Adiwiyata School.

"I am grateful that SMA N 14 Semarang has the opportunity to participate in this activity, which follows the school's mission to sustain the environment. We all hope that this activity can continue to the maximum in the future," said Aniek when giving her speech at the event.

SMA N 14 Semarang students who gathered in the Teenage Scientific Works (KIR) could showcase their energy technology works at the Upcycling Expo, and some of them also had the opportunity to plant tree seedlings.
