Visiting Keliki Village, Pertamina's Self-Reliant Energy Village - Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States Impressed by Community Leadership

Gianyar, August 27, 2023 – Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States, David Turk, visited Keliki Village, a Self-Reliant Energy Village supported by Pertamina, on Friday, August 25, 2023. Keliki Village, located in Tegallalang, serves as a pilot village for the renewable energy-based village program with the support of Pertamina.

Also present were Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia, Elizabeth Urbanas; Director General of New and Renewable Energy & Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi; VP CSR & SMEPP Management at Pertamina, Fajriyah Usman; and VP Sustainability at Pertamina, Nanang Sahroini.

The ASEAN Ministers on Energy delegation, which held meetings in Nusa Dua from August 22 to 26, took the opportunity to visit a real-life implementation of a renewable energy-based village, the self-reliant energy village by Pertamina.

Deputy Secretary of Energy of the United States, David Turk, expressed deep admiration for the community leadership, especially in the new renewable energy sources adoption. It was evident from the enthusiasm in witnessing the organic waste processing using solar panels to generate electricity. He also visited Subak Lauh Batu, a water irrigation system powered by a solar panel-equipped well pump.

Director General of New and Renewable Energy & Energy Conservation (EBTKE) at the Ministry of ESDM, Yudo Dwinanda Priaadi, appreciates Pertamina's efforts in empowering villages from an energy perspective. It does not only assist but also trains the community to become self-sufficient and do things independently.

"There's a solar power system for waste processing and an electric pump for water that uses solar energy. I believe this is a great example of the energy transition happening at the village level, demonstrating it to advanced countries like the United States," he said while expressing gratitude to Pertamina.

The breakthroughs initiated by Pertamina are empowering communities and contributing to the environment by reducing carbon emissions. He hoped that Pertamina's self-reliant energy villages would continue to grow.

VP CSR & SMEPP Management at Pertamina, Fajriyah Usman, who was also present during the visit, stated that the Self-Reliant Energy Village in Keliki positively impact the local community. It has fostered energy independence and promoted economic development through Pertamina's collaboration with the local community. She further emphasized that this program would continue to be sustainable, self-sufficient, and positively impactful for the community.

I Ketut Wita, the village head of Keliki, expressed gratitude to Pertamina and the Deputy Minister of Energy of the United States for witnessing the activities of the local community. It was especially regarding the New and Renewable Energy (NRE) use, such as solar panels for waste processing and well pumps for subak irrigation.

The assistance provided by Pertamina didn't just benefit one subak but seven subaks in Keliki Village. This support was highly beneficial, especially during the dry season when not all rice fields can be irrigated through the subak irrigation system, so bore wells are essential.

"Our village is now known globally through the Self-Reliant Energy Village program by Pertamina. Our community no longer worries about water for farming during the dry season with bore wells powered by solar panels. Additionally, the electricity needs powerd with solar power for waste management at TPS3R," he remarked.

Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), explained that beyond Keliki Village, Pertamina's self-reliant energy villages are established in 52 locations, generating 143,250 Wp of solar power, 605,000 m3/year of methane and biogas energy, 16,500 Wp of hybrid solar and wind energy, 8,000 watts of micro-hydro energy, and 6,500 liters/year of biodiesel. These efforts reduce emissions by 565,896 tons of CO2eq/year and an economic impact of IDR 1.8 billion/year for the community.

"Pertamina will continue to expand community involvement in supporting self-reliant energy programs in villages by harnessing the potential in their surroundings," stated Fadjar.

Pertamina's self-reliant energy village program aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal #7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), Goal #8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal #13 (Climate Action). Through this program, Pertamina also contributes to the Government's target of achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 and supports energy and economic self-reliance within communities.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
